Highlands and Islands tour

Starting in Edinburgh we drove towards Royal Deeside, stopping to visit Crathie Kirk where the Royal Family worship, stayed overnight in beautiful old farmhouse near Alford in Aberdeenshire.

Next day drove northwards to the coastal village of Portsoy, famous for marble, visited the pottery, had coffe at the harbour, travelled along the coast to Cullen, had a picnic lunch. Visited the Eco village at Findhorn, interesting to visit the different craftshops. Travelled on to our destination for the night at the lovely coastal village of Cromarty on the Black Isle, bed and breakfast in the delightful building of the former Cottage Hospital. Wonderful sunset that evening!

Next morning drove on to the wee car ferry from Cromarty to Nigg (1 car ferry), this is a wonderful way to travel over the Cromarty Firth, saves time and the weather condition was flat calm!
We stopped the car in the village of Dornoch a charming town with an ancient cathedral, Andrew Carnegie, the great Scots philanthropist, his home is close by Skibo Castle, Carnegie donated a large sum of money for the care of the cathedral. Had a coffee then drove further north, visiting a wonderful art gallery near John O' Groats, our destination that night was a lovely hotel at Forss near Thurso, situated beside a beautiful waterfall.

Next morning we were booked on the ferry to Stromness in Orkney .....to be continued
